The inaugural recipients of the MYSA Passback Scholarship Doc1have been announced!  Each recipient will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship towards their college.  In addition to our 8 recipients, we must also note that there were a number of tremendous applications received.  Selecting only 8 was a truly difficult task!

The goal of the Passback Scholarship is to recognize & award graduating MYSA members who embody the ideas and values of strong character & sportsmanship (Integrity, Honesty, Empathy, Kindness, Compassion, and Class) and demonstrate how the game of soccer has positively impacted their lives.  The application for the 2015 Passback Scholarship will be available in January 2015.

Please join us in congratulating our inaugural recipients!  We wish them the best of luck as they advance to college next fall:

Anthony Hartman - St. Louis, MO (Kolping Kicks SC Arnason)photo
Anthony Hartman is currently a senior at St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis, where he was on the honor roll all four (4) years and volunteered with Special Olympics, SPENSA, St. Vincent DePaul, Autism Speaks, and Feed My People. 

His soccer career began in 2001 with the Catholic Youth Council (CYC) and subsequently included St. John Vianney High School, St. Louis SC, St. Louis Scott Gallagher, Lou Fusz SC, and Kolping Kicks SC.  Brian Haddock, Anthony's high school coach, writes, "Tony Hartman is a young man of integrity and character.  He has battled through adversity on the soccer field, which has taught him many necessary life-long lessons.  Lessons in patience and the will to keep working hard to get back into playing shape are two things that come to mind."  In the past few years, Anthony has battled Sacroiliitis, a painful joint condition, to continue playing club soccer through high school.

Next fall, Anthony plans to attend the University of Missouri (Columbia) and major in accounting.

Ashlyn Powers - Excelsior Springs, MO (KC Select Heat)adsfasdf
Ashlyn Powers is a high school senior at Excelsior Springs High School in Excelsior Springs, MO.  While at ESHS, Ashlyn is actively involved in Varsity Soccer, pop choir, Tigerettes dance team, Natural Helpers, Link Crew, National Honors Society, multiple canned food drives, adopt-a-family, and the Salvation Army.

Her soccer career has included teams with KC Select SC, Futura FC, and 3 years on the Missouri Olympic Development Team in addition to being all-conference and all-district for ESHS.  According to her high school coach, Mark Ballimore, "No matter the duty at hand, from the soccer team, to her Tigerettes dance team, or everyday homework and training, she takes remarkable pride in doing those things to the best of her ability, pushing herself and others to excel and improve."

In the fall, Ashlyn will be playing soccer for Missouri Western State University (St. Joseph, MO) while majoring in Physical Therapy.

Calvin Bill - Hartsburg, MO (Sysmex Zou Crew)calvin bill
Calvin Bill is a senior at Southern Boone County High School in Ashland, MO.  At SBCHS, Calvin is the Vice-President of the Student Council, a member of the National Honors Society, the Assemby Committee, Varsity Basketball, Fishes and Loaves Soup Kitchen, and was a National Merit Semi-Finalist.

Calvin was named All-State for 2012-2013 and was the Class I Defender of the Year for 2012-2013 while playing for SBCHS.  He also currently plays club soccer for Sysmex Zou Crew, an independent team in mid-Missouri.  His high school coach, Chris Miller, applauds, "His involvement in his scholastic environment has afforded him the opportunities to make a difference in a variety of settings.  I have witnessed him as a captain on the soccer team, a member of student council and as a counselor for College For Kids and have seen him lead and participate in ways that can only make the group better than what it was when it started.  He genuinely cares about what he is doing and the people with which he works."

Calvin is planning to attend & play soccer for Central College in Pella, IA while majoring in Biochemistry.

Morgan Piotraschke - St. Peters, MO (International Soccer Academy)morgan 2
Morgan is currently a senior at Fort Zumwalt South High School in St. Peters, MO.  She is involved with the Positive Peer Influence Program, National Junior Honor Society, Empowering Young Women, Cross Country, the Missouri Girls State Program, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In addition being name Honorable Mention all-conference for her high school team, Morgan has also played for the International Soccer Academy, Tony Glavin SC, and the Missouri Olympic Development Program.  She has also served as an assistant coach for a U12 Lou Fusz SC team.  Shawn Walsh, her coaching mentor, writes, "Morgan's love for soccer is infectious, and through her positive attitude and example, passes that on to my players.  As a coach, Morgan shows good judgment, enthusiasm and dedication to the sport."

Next fall, Morgan will be playing soccer for Drury University in Springfield, MO while majoring in Communications with an emphasis in Marketing and Public Relations.

Ryan Randell - Springfield, MO (Billy Goat FC)Ryan5
Ryan Randell is a senior at Springfield Catholic High School in Springfield, MO.  While at Springfield Catholic, Ryan participates in Varsity Soccer, Varsity Tennis, Varsity Baseball, the Green Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Relay for Life, the MDA Fundraising Committee, and the "A" Honor Roll.

He has achieved a number of team and individual awards while playing for Springfield Catholic, including being named the 2013 Class 1 Offensive Player of the Year and 2013 1st Team All-State.  Ryan currently plays club soccer for Billy Goat FC.  He has also played for Springfield SC, the Mavericks team with Lake Country Soccer, and the Springfield area YMCA.  After Ryan scored a winning goal in the State Quarter-Finals, Ryan's coach writes, "Ryan quickly realized how devastated and distraught many of Sacred Heart's players were about the loss.  So almost immediately after scoring the goal he began picking up some of the opposing players off of the ground, congratulating them on a great season, and shaking their hands.  Ryan chose the empathetic, classy route and genuinely showed compassion for the other team's loss."

Ryan is planning to attend the University of Kansas next fall where he will plan club soccer and major in Architectural Engineering.

Sara Marcotte - Republic, MO (Missouri Elite '96)sara marcotte
Sara Marcotte is currently a senior at Republic High School in Republic, MO.  While at RHS, Sara has participated in Varsity Soccer, Autism Speaks, the Y.E.S. Club, Writing Club, and French Club.  She has also been named All-District, All-Conference, 1st Team All-Region, and 2nd & 3rd Team All-State while playing for Republic High School.

Sara is also an accomplished referee, being named the 2013 MYSA Young Female Referee of the Year.  She has also played club soccer for JB Marine SC and Missouri Elite FC. Sara's club coach, Lindsey Paulsell, exclaims, "I find Sara to be a goal-oriented young lady who has a clear focus of her future and will no doubt achieve every goal she sets for herself, both on and off the pitch.  She is a dedicated student and strong-willed athlete that will achieve big things at the collegiate level. Though we do not have captains in our club program, she is undoubtedly an undeniable role model for not only her team but the entire club program."

Sara will be playing soccer next fall for Chicago State University while majoring in Nursing.

Saeed Halim - Kansas City, MO (KC Milan Red Devils)Saeed
Saeed Halim is a senior at Lincoln College Prep Academy in Kansas City, MO.  While at LIncoln, Saeed excels with Varsity Soccer, is a 4-H Regional Representative, Spanish Tutor/Translator, Summer Reading Program, and the Yearbook Staff Photographer & Sports Editor.  He also volunteers with Angel Tree, Heart-to-Heart International, Hope Faith Ministries, the KC Urban Impact Center Leadership Academy, tutoring at the Wendell Phillips Elementary School, West Paseo Neighborhood Clean Up, and volunteer coach for Northeast Soccer Association.

On the pitch, Saeed has suited up for Lincoln College Prep Academy, the Foreign Language Academy Eagles, Brookside Soccer, Future FC, and KC Milan FC.  Saeed's mentor, Keverick Wilson, writes, "I have watched the difference the game of soccer has made in Saeed's life.  he has grown into a mature young man on and off the soccer field.  He has learned the importance of integrity and displays it during our personal interactions.  He strives to do the right things when faced with the peer pressure of other teenagers.  I know he has learned many life lessons as a result of the game of soccer."

In the fall, Saeed plans to play soccer for Wartburg College in Waverly, IA while double-majoring in Journalism and Sports Management, with a minor in Spanish.

Trevor Neal - New Bloomfield, MO (Sysmex Zou Crew)trevor neal
Trevor Neal is currently a senior at Fulton High School, where he is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Chapter Treasurer of the National Honors Society, and the High School Student's Teaching Elementary Program (HI-STEP).

His soccer career has included playing on the Varsity squad for Fulton High School, the Sysmex Zou Crew, and numerous indoor and open men's league teams.  He has been named 2nd Team All-State, 1st Team All Conference, and 1st Team All District for Fulton High School.  Trevor's high school coach, Brad Oestreich, writes, "Trevor has also been an extraordinary leader on and off the field.  During this past summer he took it upon himself to get all the players together and hold a players camp.  Trevor organized and created practice plans for this camp.  he also did this for the girls team early this spring as well as helped coach them in indoor games this winter. T his shows how passionate he is for the sport and how much he wants to give back tot he game that has given him so much."

Next fall, Trevor will be playing soccer for Westminster College in Fulton, MO where he'll also major in Chemistry or Pre-Engineering.
